Teradata steps up big data capabilities

US analytics firm unveils location, data aggregation and workload management tools through partnership with Oracle.

US data analytics company Teradata has announced new ‘next-generation’ BI and big data capabilities through its partnership with fellow computing giant Oracle.

Ostensibly, the developments will allow anybody running the Oracle Business Intelligence suite on Teradata platforms to garner ‘more control, functionality and business value’ from the programmes.

The two companies say this release is the result of increasing calls from customers to be able to work with expanding and complex datasets, source and analyse new types of information and gain deeper insights from their business intelligence and data warehousing – or, in short, ‘big data’. This is the latest in a line of enhancements developed through the decade-old alliance between the two.

The new capabilities include synergies between the two companies’ mapping capabilities for automated location intelligence, the ability to partially automate referencing ‘virtual cubes’ for data aggregation, and systems for the tracking and management of user profiles.

Teradata offers some practical use cases for the new location – or geospatial – developments, including finding out optimal locations for new offices or building an understanding of how far customers will travel to redeem discount vouchers.

The ‘Virtual Cubes’ can help to speed up queries and reduce the limitation on bandwidth caused by aggregated data while the workload management can allow businesses to choose which users and applications take priority on the system.

Scott Gnau, president of Teradata Labs, commented: “The new capabilities released today are just the latest example of the value being delivered to Teradata and Oracle Business Intelligence customers through a well-established joint engineering relationship.

“These alliance engineering resources, along with Teradata Professional Services professionals, are working to deploy each of these next-generation BI capabilities with OBIEE for joint customers eager to gain the ability to better manage new data types and improve the performance of complex BI environments.”
