East London’s Tech City project – the UK’s answer to Silicon Valley – has been hailed a success by Prime Minister David Cameron, as he revealed a that the number of companies involved has grown at least three-fold over the last year.
The PM revealed an interactive map late last week, accessible at techcitymap.com, which initially showed that there were 600 tech firms based in London now, compared with 200 this morning. Now, over 200 more have been added to the map, bringing the total to over 800.
Tech City is primarily centred around the Old Street and Shoreditch area of east London but tech start-ups and established companies across London are included for accounting purposes.
Mr Cameron said: "One year ago we made a major commitment to helping the tech cluster in east London grow. The successful growth we see today is thanks to the talented, creative entrepreneurs who have decided to set up there.”
He pointed to an increase in the research and development tax breaks available to small companies and work to reduce the bureaucracy small companies face as examples of how government is seeking to support the fledgling industry.
Cameron met with a number of businesses and support organisations in the area, including the chief technical officer of Songkick, Dan Crow. Click here to read The Cloud Circle’s recent interview with Crow, conducted at the Silicon Milkroundabout jobs fair in late October.
